2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (NKJV)
I’ve prayed this scripture for my stepson, that he would have a sound mind. Bipolar
disorder causes mental confusion due to the chemical imbalances in the brain.
The other day I realized that I have my own mental imbalances to deal with. Sometimes I am optimistic that my stepson is thinking and acting clearly, and then he has another episode of anger or manic behavior that plunges me into negative attitudes.
When I saw this scripture verse the other day, it reminded me that it applies to my own state of mind as well as my stepson’s. I need God to renew my mind, and I must remember that the Holy Spirit living in me provides me with courage, power, love, and clear thinking.
So let’s pray this not only for our loved one struggling with a brain disorder, but also for ourselves and our own “spiritual disorder,” that we can see things through the eyes of God and react appropriately to the difficulties we face.
It’s all part of becoming more Christ-like, which is, after all, a benefit of living through the challenges of this fallen world.
